Every new mobile device has a critical first hour: the window between enrollment and the user's first tap. During that window, IT needs the right apps, profiles, and security policies to land in the right order — or risk a device that arrives broken to the user. Until now, that order has been a roll of the dice.

With Onboarding Workflows for Android, now generally available in Workspace ONE UEM 2604, day zero is finally yours to design.

The problem with mobile enrollment today

Mobile enrollment has historically been non-deterministic. Apps, profiles, and policies land on the device in random order. When that order is wrong, the consequences range from inconvenient to severe: Launcher activates before its required apps are installed, identity-dependent apps like SSO and email fail because their certificates haven't arrived, internal apps time out because their VPN tunnels aren't ready — and, in the worst case, corporate data lands on a device before its security baseline is active to protect it.

For organizations managing mobile at scale, this isn't a theoretical risk. It's a daily source of support tickets, re-enrollments, and lost productive time.

A prioritized, deterministic deployment type for mobile

Building on the onboarding workflow feature already available for desktop, Freestyle Orchestrator now supports onboarding workflows for mobile devices. Admins can define an explicit, prioritized sequence of resources that must be completed on a newly enrolled device before any other entitlements deploy. Configure the workflow in the same canvas-based experience you already know, set the deployment type to Onboarding, and assign to your target smart group(s).

From there, the platform does the rest:

  • All other entitlements wait. Direct assignments, other workflows, and products hold until the onboarding workflow completes successfully.
  • State is visible. Device Details surfaces a clear Onboarding state — In Progress, Completed, or Failed — so admins always know where each device stands.

The outcome: every new device reaches a known-good state, with resources delivered in the order you designed.

Built for fleets that can't afford a bad first hour

Onboarding Workflows are especially valuable for organizations where consistency at day zero is the difference between productivity and a support call:

  • Retail and warehouse. Rugged devices come up with Launcher, Wi-Fi, scanner profiles, and inventory apps in the right sequence — ready to scan, count, and serve on shift one.
  • Healthcare. Shared clinical devices arrive with security profiles and approved apps in place before any patient data is synced.
  • Field services. Technicians receive tablets that are fully configured before they leave the depot—no truck-roll-and-call-support scenarios.
  • Financial services and regulated industries. Restriction profiles, MTD agents, and compliance configurations are guaranteed to be active before corporate data lands on the device.

A better experience for admins, end users, and the helpdesk

Onboarding Workflows are more than just sequencing. They change the economics of device rollout:

  • Lower support cost per device. Race-condition tickets shrink dramatically when enrollment behavior is predictable.
  • Faster time-to-productivity. Users get a device that works on the first try, not the second or third.
  • No new tool to learn. The Onboarding Workflows feature is built into Freestyle Orchestrator, so admins use the same low-code canvas they already know.
  • Same workflow superpowers. Retries, conditional logic, sequencing, and grouping all behave the same as any other workflow

Get started today

Onboarding Workflows for Android is generally available now in Workspace ONE UEM release 2604, with no additional licensing. Open Freestyle Orchestrator in your UEM Console, create a new workflow, set the deployment type to Onboarding, and assign it to a smart group.
