Mobile printers are critical for efficiently managing workflows and minimizing mistakes across all industries in the frontline space. And today, we’re excited to announce that Workspace ONE UEM now supports mobile printers, starting with Zebra printers.

MQTT takes printer management to the next level

Since the inception of Workspace ONE, we’ve supported a variety of features and capabilities built to support mission-critical devices used by frontline workers. Over the years, we’ve continued to invest in this space to help frontline organizations scale quickly to support new and innovative technologies like BYO programs, augmented and virtual reality headsets, peripherals, digital signage, and interactive kiosks.

To support an even broader range of frontline and IoT use cases, we’re expanding our platform with native support for MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport)-powered devices like printers.

MQTT is a lightweight, standards-based protocol that has become the de facto standard for industrial IoT communication. Think of it as a highly efficient messaging layer designed to connect thousands of devices reliably, even over low-bandwidth or intermittent networks.

And this matters beyond printers. By building on MQTT, Workspace ONE is establishing a scalable foundation for managing a broader range of connected and purpose-built devices, including scanners, RFID devices, sensors, and other IoT endpoints that are increasingly part of frontline workflows.

Manage your printers just like any other endpoint

Printers are key for improving labeling compliance, tracking and tracing items, and inventory efforts (like cycle counts) across industries.

In retail, they increase employee productivity and accuracy by enabling portable printing of barcode labels, receipts, and RFID tags. In healthcare, printers help strengthen patient care by providing labels and wristbands that assist healthcare providers in identifying patients, tracking samples, and managing inventory.

No matter how they’re used, printers are a critical part of any frontline business, and downtime could cost thousands in lost worker productivity and impact overall revenue.

That’s why printer management can’t be an afterthought. However, most organizations fall into one of three traps:

  1. They don’t manage them at all, exposing them to security vulnerabilities and costly downtime.
  2. They use an OEM (original equipment manufacturer)-specific management tool, locking them into one printer brand and creating management silos.
  3. They use an endpoint management solution to enroll and track printers without any printer-specific management capabilities.

Workspace ONE lets you easily:

  • Enroll and stage printers at scale.
  • Push device configurations and firmware updates.
  • Monitor printer health and availability in real time.
  • Set alerts and automate remediation before issues affect workers.
  • Get analytics and reporting across the printer fleet.

What's next

Our printer management is now generally available (GA) and currently supports Zebra mobile printers. In the future, we’ll be expanding printer support to additional OEMs, and adding deeper management capabilities. Plus, by building on MQTT, we plan to expand beyond printers to manage a wide variety of MQTT-powered IoT devices.
