Mod Stack architecture: Rebuilding for flexibility, scalability, and resilience

The energy from Omnissa ONE 2025 in Las Vegas is still buzzing. Sharing the great conversations and feedback from customers with our engineering team has been invigorating. While our product and field teams excel at building a great roadmap, nothing compares to hearing customer stories firsthand. You've shown us how our products are optimizing supply chains, streamlining flight operations, enhancing logistics, and making an impact across every industry imaginable.
It was also gratifying to finally unveil the Mod Stack—our five-year re-architecture and re-platforming effort. The name "Mod Stack” was internal, but it somehow stuck, even though everyone agreed engineering should leave branding to the experts. This project was started in an effort to boost our own engineering efficiency and operations. But it has become the foundation for the next decade of innovation. This is more than an upgrade; it’s a statement about where we’re headed.
Why rebuild a foundation?
Workspace ONE Unified Endpoint Management is the core of the Omnissa platform. It provides a consistent way to manage and secure a vast array of endpoints. But the world of endpoint management is complex. It must account for countless device types, operating systems, use cases, integrations and enterprise architectures.
We were starting off with a highly coupled, 4-million-line monolith. While the architecture had served us well during its time, it was difficult to test, extend and scale. We knew we needed a change. Did we predict the rise of AI five years ago? Not exactly. But we architected for something even more fundamental: flexibility, scalability, and resilience. We built a platform ready to adapt to whatever comes next.
Defining the outcomes for a seamless evolution
The mod stack project was a complete rebuild for us, but for you, it had to feel like an upgrade. To do that we established key outcomes from the start to ensure a seamless transition.
Zero-disruption migration: Your transition to the new architecture needs to feel effortless—with no re-enrollment, reconfiguration, or loss of capabilities.
Built-in security and privacy: The new platform must enforce multi-tenancy and privacy controls at its core, ensuring your data is protected by design.
Effortless horizontal scale: Need to add more endpoints or adopt new use cases? The Mod Stack allows us to scale non-disruptively right alongside your growth.
Proactive observability: We built a highly observable system with metrics for everything. This allows us to detect and resolve many types of issues before they ever impact you.
Core platform services: We surfaced foundational capabilities like desired state management and distributed workload execution as core services. This gives you and our teams the flexibility to integrate and repurpose them for a wide range of needs.
Mod Stack wasn't just about modernizing code. It was about creating a flexible, scalable, and resilient platform that empowers organizations to work as they need to.
The power of the Control Plane
We don't just deliver a service—we provide a platform that runs your business-critical workflows. Operational integrity, compliance, and data governance are not just features; they are requirements. The Control Plane is the key.
What is the Control Plane? It abstracts infrastructure services like orchestration, persistence, secret-management, etc. from the application layer. This separation allows us to deploy anywhere—from public cloud infrastructure to private sovereign deployments. It gives you the flexibility you need for both deployment and upgrades, aligning seamlessly with your operational needs.
Building for the future
Why does this matter? Because we did the hard work then, we can seamlessly integrate with disruptive technologies like AI today. We can work backwards from the most impactful use cases and the best customer experience—rather than letting platform limitations dictate what’s possible.
While the first upgrades were challenging, we quickly identified patterns and built out detection and validation utilities. Today we’ve automated most aspects of the mod stack upgrade, from scheduling to data migration, ensuring a smooth, zero-touch process for most environments. A Tribute to the Team
One last thing. Transformational projects that span years are never easy. We navigated a pandemic, an acquisition, and a divestiture through this journey. This achievement would not be possible without the incredible engineering team behind it. What you see today is the result of countless late nights, sacrificed weekends, and a relentless dedication that goes far beyond a typical workday. This commitment came from a team that truly believed in the purpose and impact of what we were building.

To the UEM engineering team: Step back for a moment and look at the forest, not just the trees. What you have accomplished here is truly remarkable. This platform is a testament to your passion, skill and grit—and you should be very proud of what we've built.
